A Leap from the Tree: A Childhood Trauma Revisited

July 23, 2024

A Personal Journey of Resilience, Rare Medical Conditions, and Unanswered Questions

Ever wondered how a childhood trauma shapes your life?

In this gripping episode of Talking Point, I recount a pivotal moment from my childhood that changed my life forever. At just 10 years old, I fell 20-30 feet from a tree, narrowly escaping death by the slimmest of margins. Born with Bilateral Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, a rare condition affecting my vision and associated with hypoglycaemia and intellectual disabilities, I’ve faced numerous challenges.

Join me as I delve into the harrowing experience and the long-term impacts of the fall, which left me questioning whether my memory and language difficulties are linked to the head injury or my congenital condition. More on Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, its symptoms, causes and sources of support, is available below under 'Additional Media.'

This episode marks a new departure for me, as I turn the microphone on my own story instead of my usual reporting on global accessibility and inclusion issues. Learn about the resilience, uncertainty, and strength that has defined my journey.

Image shows Philip Anderson, aged 28, with a mustache, wearing a red Reebok sweatshirt and jeans, holding his one-month-old son wrapped in a white blanket. They are standing outside near a white gate, looking towards a park with bare trees and a fence in the background. The park is significant as it is the location where Philip once fell 20 feet from a tree, a story discussed in this podcast episode.
